I was recently listening to some old shows and started listing some Unique Grateful Dead Set openers. Just for fun here are some of the nice ones from shows i attended.
7-13-85 1st Set: Sat Night >>Fire On The Mtn
10-31-79 1st Set: China Cat >> Rider (usually 2nd set or 1st set closer)
6-8-80 1st Set: Uncle John's >> Playin >> Uncle John's
8-23-80 2nd Set: Drums >> Uncle John's Band
2-20-82 2nd Set : franklin's Tower >> Samson & Delilah
These are the ones I came up with off the top of my head.

10-17-1983 an amazing Sugaree (one of the best versions ever) opens the first set.

Typically Sugaree would follow Minglewood or Hell in a Bucket in the 1980s...

Sugaree opens the second set! on 07-30-1983, but the 10-17 version is much better...

The debut version of Terrapin opens 02-26-1977 first set...

10-03-1987--Maggie's Farm into Cumberland Blues opens the 2nd set...

I agree with the 6-17-91 Eyes. Great way to start a good early 90's show. Good Call!

Having only recently downloaded the 2/26/77 from Swing Auditorium, the first time played Terrapin to open sounds pretty sweet.

I would say 7/2/89 which opened with Playing>Crazy Fingers>Wang Dang Doodle (they did open with playing a couple but this one is nice) Then the 2nd set opened with a pretty speedy FOTD. I'm not sure it was played that fast since it's early days.
